ABSTRACT

This study was carried out to examine parental academic background and primary school pupils’ academic performance in mathematics, using 6 selected schools in Ojo Local Government Area, Lagos state as a case study. Specifically, the study was aimed at determining the extent to which parent level of education influences the academic performance of their children, and determine the extent to which the occupation of parents also influences or affect the child’s academic performance. The study employed the survey descriptive research design. A total of 77 responses were validated from the survey. From the responses obtained and analysed, the findings revealed that there is a significant relationship between the economic status of the parents’ and child academic performance, there is a significant relationship between parental level of education and child academic performance, and there is a significant relationship between the type of parent’s occupation and child’s academic performance. The study recommend the Federal Government should make the mass literacy campaign a more effective venture than it is today.  Parents should be given proper orientation on the importance of education and as it affects their children’s performance at school. More so, teachers should be vigilant to identify those that are affected by parental variables, so as to give them necessary assistance.
